Support and Share Nights take place on the first Tuesday of every month from 7-9 pm.
Support and Share Afternoons run virtually each Thursday from noon to 1:30 pm.
Our first series of virtual closed groups ran this year from October to mid-December.
As always, everyone is welcome to participate in our programs.

We did this to continue to support people in Ottawa who are grieving and in isolation.

Tuesday Monthly Support and Share Nights
On the first Tuesday of every month, 7-9pm, a guest speaker joins us by Webinar, followed by virtual breakout groups by specific type of loss: loss of spouse, loss of parent, sibling relative or friend, loss by suicide and for youth (grades 7-12).
In October we intend to add a bilingual break-out group, for those who are more comfortable expressing themselves in French.
Wednesday Weekly Support and Share Walks
Our weekly walks are on hold for now.
People come out simply to walk together along the trail behind the Parliament buildings.
The walk takes place every Wednesday, from 11:55 am to 1:15 pm. It starts from the foyer of the Bronson Centre, 211 Bronson Avenue.
Thursday Weekly Support and Share Afternoons
People who feel they could benefit from some virtual peer support over video conferencing will want in our weekly Support and Share Afternoons.
This group is open to all different types of losses, and takes place every Thursday, from noon to 1:30 pm.
Closed Groups
Each Spring and Fall we hold closed groups by specific loss type. Closed groups run over 8 weeks with the same group of participants. Together with trained facilitators they explore different topics each week.
Our closed groups will be held virtually due to social distancing rules in place.
Educational Workshops
We share our expertise with others in our community, about how to help and inspire others. We offer various educational workshops throughout the year.

Art Therapy
Butterfly Memorial Event
Held this year in early July, people from the Ottawa community gathered virtually, to remember and honour their loved ones. They listened to music and to the words of Scott and Anne Oake, then watched on as we released live butterflies in Beechwood's Botanical Gardens.

Art therapy can help people express their grief through active art creation. It supports emotional, creative and spiritual growth.
Tree of Life Memorial Event
Held this year at the beginning of December, the Ottawa community came together virtually. We lit candles and held a minute of silence for our loved ones. Over 100 ornaments were hung on our tree. Alana Kainz was our guest speaker, who touched, humbled and inspired us.

Our communication and counselling program is offered weekly for clients wanting to work on communication skills while connecting with other people and families with aphasia. This program is offered in small groups of people with aphasia led by speech-language therapy and social work staff. This group provides enhanced opportunities for participating in conversations in a natural setting. Learning and use of alternate communication strategies, such as gesture, drawing, key wording, and others to supplement ongoing recovery of language. This program is also offered in French.

Communication and Counselling-Non-Stroke
This program supports the unique needs of people who are living with aphasia due to neurological conditions, neurodegenerative disease, or who sometimes may not have a clear diagnosis. Many of the people in this group have been told they are living with Primary Progressive Aphasia. The focus of this program is to maintain a functional level of communication for as long as possible. Therapy is offered in a group format with extra support available for family members. The non-stroke program is supported by both speech-language therapy and social work staff. This program is also offered in French.
Physiotherapy
We offer a unique physiotherapy program that has been adapted to be aphasia-friendly. Our goal is to help people with aphasia and their families maintain a level of fitness to support activities of daily living. This program focuses on cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, balance, and functional strengthening. As part of our family-centered approach we encourage family members to also participate in their own fitness program. This program is also offered in French and to clients with other neurological conditions.
Individual, Couple, and Family Counselling
Counselling is provided by our social work staff who have many years of experience working with people with aphasia and their families. Counselling is made more fully accessible to people with aphasia by utilizing the expertise of our speech-language pathology staff in a co-therapy format.

Individual Speech and Language Therapy

For members who wish to supplement their group therapy, we offer individual speech and language therapy. Therapy is supported by our Speech-Language Pathology Staff. Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs) work under the supervision of Speech Language Pathologists (S-LPs) to provide ongoing therapy for specific speech or language goals. Individual therapy goals are tailored to meet the member’s specific needs. Members can focus on a personal project like re-connecting with friends through writing or therapy could target the speech or language challenges that aphasia causes.
Special Interest Groups
The Aphasia Centre offers special interest groups to our members on a rotating basis. These groups can be a complement to a communication and counselling group. These groups offer benefits such as increased socialization, additional opportunities for communication and rediscovering previously enjoyed or new activities for increased participation in community life.
